    Camp Cool Spring:

The Hills are Alive with Song I!

    Ages 8 - 13

    Teaching Artist: Steve Warner

Nature has been the inspiration for thousands of songs. Just think of how many songs reference the sun and moon!  We’ll rely on the beautiful surroundings at Cool Spring to help tap into our creativity. Expect great things to happen. And it will...as you learn about song form, structure, lyric and melody in way that will empower you to write something special. Campers do not need any prior music skill or knowledge, just a willingness to express their ideas. Those who play instruments or sing are encouraged to share their talents with the class. We will explore types of songs and what makes certain ones so memorable. Participants will also have an opportunity to sample instruments for accompaniment...guitar, ukelele, mandolin, even a hand drum. We’ll also delve into the art of performing and touch on a bit of music theory. Our primary goal will be to write a song as a group and perform it for parents and guests on the last day of camp. The week will be somewhat tailored to the make up of the group and we’ll have plenty of time for one on one mentoring. Our primary objective will be to have FUN.

Camp is held Monday through Friday

      THREE SESSION WORKSHOP

    with Aaron Treher

Your Art: Inspired by Nature and the Work of Andy Goldsworthy

Combine your love of nature with the boundless creativity that exists in each of us.  Enjoy a unique three session workshop led by CraftWorks artist-in-residence Aaron Treher.  The first two evenings you’ll study the work of English artist Andy Goldsworthy and you’ll explore the trails of CraftWorks to find a site that has special meaning to you.  You’ll sketch, reflect, survey and design a temporary artwork somewhere on the landscape.  On Saturday, you’ll actually construct your artwork and the class will invite their friends and families to view the exhibit at a special reception.  And since change is part of nature, as time goes by you’ll be able to watch your work evolve, erode and decay – each phase bringing its own renewal.

The Hills are Alive with Song II!

    Ages 8 - 13

    Teaching Artist: Steve Warner

This camp is an extension for those that participated the previous week, but also an oppourtuniy for new participants. We will cover much of the same material, but also work with individual campers to find their musical voice in song. The goal for returning campers will be to write their own songs...with a little help from their friends. Collaboration will be encouraged. There will be lots of time for one on one mentoring throughtout the process. For all campers, we will still have a group project...writing and performing a song based on experiencing the beautiful hills, woods and creatures of Cool Spring. Hopefully several new songs will come out of the week and we can have both a group and individual performances for parents and guests on the last day of camp. Again, our primary objective will be to have FUN.
